“The statistics on Kutless are impressive: Best selling new artist of 2002; a feat accomplished in just six months due to a mid-year record release. Three number one R&R Rock singles. One top 5 CHR single that unexpectedly became the longest charting song in the history of the R&R CHR chart. Total sales of 155,000 to date, on their self-titled debut release. Kutless played 220 shows their first year to almost 200,000 people. All of this from an unknown rock band with no indie track record. In Christian music, that’s pretty hard to do.” Source: Christian Music Central

Review

1. The first song on Kultess’ first album is “Your Touch.” Overall the song is about how we need God’s touch, but it goes a little bit deeper than that. “Not knowing why I ever retreated from Your arms, a mistake I made, now oh Lord I need you embrace.” The song talks about how when we lose sight of God and His will, we notice it and long to get back to Him. The end is a little repetitive, but it gives the song a good sound. Really good song, one of my favorites.

2. The second song, “In Me,” is about a guy who gave up his life to God and let go of all the things he used to do. But now his friends want to know why he is doing what he is doing. “You want to know the differences between us, you want to know why these things have changed.” It’s a good song, not really any guitar solos (… though you won’t find many of those in Kutless’ music), but the guitars parts in general are awesome.

3. “Run,” song number three, is a love song from God to us. It’s a fairly slow song that talks about how God wants to be with us, but we are running from Him. The first time I heard “Run” I feel in love with it, it really leaves you reevaluating your relationship with God. “Looking down from above as you watch TV, wondering why you’re ignoring Me.” “Why do you run? Why do you hide? Oh, don’t you know that I just want to be with you?” There are actually a few cello solos in this song, and I think that’s what makes this song so diversely good.

4. The next song, “Vow,” is about making a new years vow to God to give all ourselves to God and do all he wants us to do. “I’m crying out to you as I make my new years vow, I’ll tell you I love you and I’ll honor you somehow. Hear my promise to You in this new years vow I give You all of me. You’ll be all of my life and I’ll never think twice to do all You have for me, in my new years vow.”

5. The fifth song is “Pride Away.” “Have you ever seen a man stumble and fallen all due to his pride? I don’t want to be another one, fallen due to my pride.” The jest of this song is begging God to take away our pride (or in this case, the lead singer…), and to make us humble. “Lord keep me only focused on You, make me a humble man. Don’t ever let me take the credit for all that You have done.”

6. “Down” is about a girl how wants to be more than what she is, but doesn’t know how too. “She tries just to be what she’s not but she’s destroying herself” “She wants to fly away from this, but only God knows how to fly away from this He will help her now to fly away from this.” So many times we are just bogged down with the world around us and we forget that we are just strangers here.

7. “Again,” the seventh song, is a song about how we don’t deserve the love that God gives us. “You cover me with Your love though I nailed You to a cross I don’t understand but I thank You the same.” It’s so amazing how God always loves us, even when we fail him. “Love again, again, again, I don’t deserve this love You gave to me”

8. Song number eight is “Dry,” is about how in some points in our life we feel dry for God’s love. Even though we know He’s there and loves us the same, we just don’t feel God’s presents the way we usually do. “The love’s the same yet emotion’s running dry. The feeling’s gone but I know You’re still there. I guess it’s just a part of my life that I must bare. It doesn’t feel the same, and I’m feeling down” “But who am I to complain?” It’s a slow song, but very good.

9. The ninth song, “Tonight,” is about praising God (most likely at a concert). “Can’t you feel the music all around you? Flashing lights but love can fill your mind. Can’t you feel the sounds of love flow through you? We’re praising him tonight.”

10. “This Time” is about a man who turned around and walked away from God. “You were the one that I looked to, I never thought I’d see you run. I never thought I’d see you turn your back on all you knew was right, you turned your back on God.” The song is basically a cry not to walk away from God.

11. Song eleven, “Saved,” overall is about Jesus being the only way to be saved. “I know that You are the only way to be saved, from my infirmity. You shed Your blood you gave your love away, all to cover me… I tell you that He is the way.”

12. The last song, “Grace and Love,” is a beautiful slow song that thanks God for saving us. It’s the only song that Kutless has a girl singing, though she just sings in the background.

“Many things are hard for me, many things can pull us down
I don’t understand why I do what I do
How could I take my eyes off you, after all You’ve done for me
It’s by Your grace and love You’ve forgiven me,
And by that love and grace, I am amazed
It’s by Your grace and love I am free, I am free
And it’s by grace and love that I am free
I’ll live with You eternally,
I thank you Lord that I am free, I thank you for loving me
I thank You Lord for dying upon the tree of Calvary
I thank You Lord for loving me; I thank You for dying for me
Because it’s by grace and love I am saved
It’s by Your grace and love You’ve forgiven me
And by that love and grace, I’m amazed
It’s by Your grace and love I am free, I am free”
