Canon A510 Review
Conclusion:
This is a great camera, it's easy to use, nice and simple when you are
just learning it, but has the capabilities that you can utilize as an
advanced user. The controls are comfortable and easy to reach, the camera
is nice and small so it's portable.
The wheel to switch between different recording modes is wonderful, and
it's also a plus to have a simple switch to go between playback and recording
mode. You can easily zoom in on pictures in playback mode, or even freeze
the review time in recording mode and zoom in on the picture and look
around.
The time from pushing the power button to the camera's being ready to
record is amazing, it takes an average of only 2 seconds. The zoom is
quick and powerful, but the lens is not bulky. The LCD screen is a great
size, big enough to see the details, small enough to keep the battery
life good.
The SD memory that this camera takes is another plus, it is not overly
expensive, it's quick, and physically small, allowing for the camera's
size to be small.
Shutter lag is not bad at all, the camera will take it's time to focus,
then it will snap the picture, you can hold down the shutter button halfway
like on most digital cameras, the camera will then focus and let you know
it's ready to take a picture, then it snaps the picture as soon as you
push the button down the rest of the way.
The zoom flash, tied to the zoom lens, will pitch the flash according
to the distance from the subject, and it really does work.
The shooting modes will help you get the correct shot, video mode is
great for those moments that you just have to capture, though if you are
big into video, I suggest looking at getting a real digital video camera.
The camera takes just 2 AA batteries, allowing for small size, while
the batteries are easily acquireable, though it's recommended that you
buy NIMH rechargeable batteries, as with any battery taking camera, not
only is the battery life very long, but you are also saving money, time,
carrying around less power stuff, and they are environmentally safer.
This camera also has many optional accessories, they do have a pricetag,
but they would be great to have. These accessories include: Telephoto
Lens, Wide angle lens, close up lens, waterproof case, external flash
for increasing flash range, and other cool stuff.
Weaknesses:
--The autorotate is stupid and doesnt judge what's supposed to be portrait
and landscape, but you can turn autorotate off and rotate your portrait
format pictures manually.
--Takes only 2 batteries making for slow flash charging
So overall, this is a great camera for the $200 price tag in February
of 2005.
