How
to Share a Printer on Your Network
You know how it goes, you've got one printer and wish to share it between
more than one computer, but it's not a "Network Printer."
Not to worry, it's possible.
The first thing to do is make sure all your networked computers are on the
same "workgroup." To do this:
Windows XP
1. Right click "My Computer"
2. Click "Properties."
3. Click the "Computer Name" tab
4. Click "Change"
5. Make sure the "Workgroup" field is the same
and reboot the computer.
Windows Vista
1. Right click "Computer"
2. On the left, click "Advanced System Settings"
3. On the window that comes up, click the "Computer
Name" tab
4. Click "Change"
5. Make sure the workgroup field is the same between the
other computer and reboot.
Now that the workgroup is the same between the computers, you're ready to
share the printer.
On the computer that has the printer attached, do the following:
Windows XP
1. Open the Control Panel
2. Open "Printers and Faxes"
3. Right click the printer you wish to share
4. Click "Sharing and Security"
5. Click the link to allow sharing on the network and then
"Just enable file and printer sharing" if a window pops up.
6. Select the checkbox to share the printer on the network.
7. Give the printer a name, and click OK
Windows Vista
1. Open the Control Panel
2. Open "Printers"
3. Right click the printer you wish to share
4. Click "Sharing and Security"
5. Click the link to allow sharing on the network and then
"Just enable file and printer sharing" if a window pops up.
6. Select the checkbox to share the printer on the network.
7. Give the printer a name, and click OK
On the computer that is networked to the computer with the shared
printer, but without said printer attached, you must now add the printer
by this procedure, it is essentially the same between Windows XP
and Vista.
1. Open the "Printers" or "Printers and
Faxes" window
2. Click "add a printer" on the top left of the
window (task pane)
3. Follow the prompts, selecting a "Network Printer
or a printer attached to another computer" when the option comes up.
Browse for a printer and navigate to the printer that has been shared, and
follow the prompts.
note: click "continue anyway" when a window pops up asking if
you wish to install the drivers for the printer. |
